Dr. Ahmar Ferguson
“Children do not exist in isolation, and neither does their behaviour. Every child is shaped by their relationships, their experiences, and the systems that surround them. My work is rooted in the belief that when we slow down, think systemically, and respond with curiosity rather than judgement, we create the conditions for genuine change. Lasting and meaningful impact comes from empowering adults, deepening understanding, and building environments where children feel safe enough to learn, connect and thrive.”

About Ahmar
Dr Ahmar Ferguson is a Child and Educational Psychologist with a background spanning both education and mental health. His work is grounded in the belief that children and young people thrive when the adults around them feel supported, understood, and able to think clearly about what behaviour may be communicating.
Dr Ferguson works with schools, organisations, and families to support children and young people experiencing emotional, social, or learning-related difficulties. His areas of focus include emotional wellbeing, behaviour, attachment, neurodiversity, and school-based anxiety. Rather than relying on labels alone, he takes a thoughtful, contextual approach that considers the child within their wider relationships, environments, and systems.
His approach is psychologically informed, relational, and compassionate. Drawing on evidence-based psychological frameworks, alongside experience within education and CAMHS, Dr Ferguson works collaboratively with parents, educators, and professionals. He does not believe in quick fixes or one-size-fits-all solutions, instead supporting settings and families to develop realistic, meaningful approaches, tailored to the individual child and their context.
When working with schools and organisations, Dr Ferguson aims to create spaces that feel containing, rather than pressurised. His work may include consultation, assessment, training, and reflective practice, with a particular emphasis on whole-school and systemic approaches. He is passionate about supporting adults to feel more confident in their understanding and responses, recognising that sustainable change rarely sits with one child or one professional alone.
For parents and carers, Dr Ferguson offers a calm, non-judgemental space to think together about what may be happening beneath the surface. He understands how overwhelming it can feel when a child is struggling, and works to support families in making sense of both their child’s needs and their own experiences, with clarity and compassion.
Across all his work, Dr Ferguson is guided by the belief that every interaction matters, that progress is often quiet and gradual, and that supporting children means also supporting the adults who care for them.
“Lasting change rarely sits with one child. It happens when the adults around them feel supported, reflective, and steady.”
Child and Educational Psychologist
Dr Ahmar Ferguson is a HCPC registered Child and Educational Psychologist and chartered member of the British Psychological Society (BPS). He completed his Doctorate at the Institute of Education, and his doctoral thesis explored how Educational Psychologists can support staff with work related stress. Altogether, Dr Ferguson has worked to support children, families, and schools for over 20 years.
Parent
Alongside his professional expertise as an Educational Psychologist, Dr Ferguson is also a father. His lived experience of parenting brings an added depth, humility, and authenticity to his work. It means he understands not only the theory and research behind child development, but also the everyday realities, joys, and challenges that families navigate. This dual perspective strengthens his ability to connect with parents, schools and organisations in a grounded and compassionate way. His work is shaped not only by evidence, but by empathy, informed by both professional knowledge and the meaningful, ongoing experience of raising a child himself.
Learning Mentor
Before completing his Masters in Psychology, Dr Ferguson spent 7 years working in an inner London Primary School, progressing from one to one behaviour support, to Learning Mentor, to Behaviour and Attendance Lead. During this time he worked closely with children, parents, carers, and teachers to reduce barriers to learning.
Mental Health Clinician
Dr Ferguson has previously worked in a CAHMS service as a mental health clinician. He delivered therapeutic interventions to children and young people between the ages of 5 and 18. He worked on the neurodevelopmental pathway, working with children who were diagnosed with autism or ADHD.
Twinkl Inclusion Advisory Board
Dr Ferguson currently serves as a member of Twinkl’s Inclusion Advisory Board, where he contributes expertise in developmental, social and emotional wellbeing to support inclusive practice across educational resources. In this role, he works collaboratively with educators and curriculum designers to ensure that materials reflect diverse learners, promote equity, and support positive outcomes for all children.
School Governor
Dr Ferguson is proud to serve as a school governor, bringing both his professional expertise as an Educational Psychologist, and his deep commitment to inclusive practice. In this role, he supports strategic decision-making, champions the wellbeing of pupils and staff, and ensures that the voices of children and families remain central to school development.
